Sheppard AFB 624 and 884 Central Plant Expansion, Wichita Falls, TX

James Lane Mechanical was awarded a design build project to expand the chilled water capacity of two central plants at Sheppard Air Force Base. The additional chilled water capacity would be used to provide cooling to multiple surrounding building by means of distributing chilled water utilizing direct buried pipe. By utilizing chilled water produced at the central plant in lieu of chilled water produced at each building via air-cooled chillers, energy savings of 40% were instantaneous. This project included adding one 600 ton centrifugal chiller, one 600 ton cooling tower, multiple distribution pumps with VFDs, and an upgrade to the DDC energy management system. Many challenges were faced with the distribution of buried chilled water pipe due to interference with existing utilities throughout the base. However the project was completed successfully and on time with minimal disruptions to all facilities.
